Many older homes have solid walls rather than cavity construction, which behave differently in relation to moisture. A surveyor will look for evidence of damp-related issues and consider their possible causes, from ground levels to failed rainwater goods.
Roofs, chimneys and rainwater goods
Original slate roofs, chimney stacks and lead flashings age over time. Their condition, and the condition of gutters and downpipes, is a recurring theme in survey reports on period property.
Alterations and services
Over a century of ownership usually brings extensions, removed chimney breasts, altered openings and updated services. Understanding what has been done, and how well, is an important part of the survey.
